We had a good turnout for our first session back after the Easter break and it was great to see everyone. Hockey was the main sport we played. After a warm up, led by Ray, we practised some Hockey skills. These included dribbling with the ball, a traffic light game, moving the ball through the cones, then moving the ball in a figure of 8 around the cones. They then paired up passing the ball between the pair as they made their way around the cones. The final practice was shooting with the kids dribbling the ball half way down the hall before shooting towards a goal made up of cones in front of a bench. After shooting they would collect their ball, dribble back and pass on to the next person so that they could take their turn. After the main break we put all that good practice to use in some small sided games. The first match up was between the green and yellow teams with the green team winning a close battle 6 to 5. Next up the blue team played the yellow's and the blue team ran out winners. It was then the battle of the two winning teams - the green's and the blue's to see who would be champions. The game went one way and the other but it was the green team that won out by a score line of 4 to 3. We finished off with some games of Boccia with the group splitting in to two teams. We started off with 9 hoops to aim for and with each game the number of hoops reduced. The reds won the first game. The blue team won the second game, with 5 hoops to aim for. The final game with just three hoops was won by the blue team 4-2. It is Todd's birthday next week so we all sang him Happy Birthday. Alan then presented our Star performers their certificates and the were Charlotte and Hal - well done both! Numbers were a bit down this week but we had fun none the less as we enjoyed a fantastic last session before the Easter Break. Ray was absent as well so Alan led the warm up before we got going with some catching practice in pairs. First off we did some bounce passes then we did some throwing and catching without bouncing the ball. We then moved on to a game of Champion. The group split in to two groups with Ollie leading one game and Alan the other. They throw to each child in turn. If they catch the ball successfully they move up the line. If they drop it then they move to the bottom of the queue. At the end of the game Valentina was Champion in Ollie's group and Charlotte the champion in Alan's group, but there were several kids leading the way at various points during the game. Before the main break we then did some fielding practice - picking the ball up from a cone and throwing at the stumps. After the main break we practice batting - hitting the ball off a cone towards the end of the hall as straight as possible. We then went on to play some three tee cricket games. Each player had to hit three balls off of three tees then try and get as many runs as possible before the fielding team put the tees and tennis balls back in to position. Alexander's team won the first game by 47 runs to 42. The second game was a lot closer with Alexander's team scoring 80 runs. The final player for Valentina's team was Alan. He needed 7 runs to win, 6 to draw but only managed 5!!! At the end of a great session Alan gave each of the kids an Easter Egg for all their efforts over the term. We wish you all a great Easter break and look forward to seeing you back on the 22nd April
We had a great session of Benchball and Archery this week at Epping Forest Sportability Club this Saturday, despite a few people being away. After the warm up we practised throwing and catching in a big circle before splitting up in to three teams for some round robin games of Benchball. After the main break we switched sports to Archery. The group split in to two teams and, after some practice rounds, the two teams went head to head. Each person had three arrows on their turn and Alan totalled up the scores once each person had a turn. Ray's side won the first round with a score of 101 to 69 with Kerrie scoring a bullseye for Ray's team and Davina scoring on too for Alan's team. Alan's team got revenge in the second game winning by 82 to 54. We finished up with some games of Boccia. The blue team won the first game easily by 8 shots in the hoops to 3. It was a bit closer in the second game but the blues ran out winners once more by 10 to 6. Our star performers this week were Kealan and Davina - a very well done to both of you. See you all again next Saturday for our last session before the Easter Break.
Firstly, apologies for the lack of a post last week, as I was away. Alan and the team led a great session of Tennis and the Stars of the Week were Sonny and Valentina. Alan was unwell this week so Ray and Ollie led a session of basketball. After a thorough warm up, the kids grabbed a ball each and practiced their bouncing and dribbling. Ray had them bouncing at waist height, then high followed by low bounces. Ollie then led a traffic light game before the kids paired up to bounce the ball between them. We then laid out rows of cones for the dribble around, up the hall and back again. Then at the half way mark Ray asked that they move the ball around their waist and between their legs, before dribbling back. We then did some shooting practice making use of the baskets at each end of the hall. After the main break we played some one-on-one match ups before passing around a big circle. We then finished off with some small sided games with the group splitting in to three teams - yellows, blues and greens. In the first game it was a 1-1 draw between the blue team and the yellows. Then the green team faced the yellows and that ended up with a 1-0 win. The last game saw the blues face the green team but the green team prevailed again 1-0 due to a great basket by Todd. Our star performers this week were Alexander and Swaran. Well done lads!
See you all again next week for more fun and games, when hopefully Alan will be fit and well enough to return! On a cold and miserable March morning it was good to be in Oak View School Hall having fun while exercising. Our main sport this week was Rugby. Ray started the session off with a warm up, leading the kids in jogging around the hall and doing a variety of stretches. It was then on to Rugby and we started off working in pairs passing to each other. We then incorporated throwing the ball in the air, clapping, before catching again - between passes. Then we started to move the ball around the waist as well. Finally we did some over & under and side to side - getting used to receiving the ball in different positions Once the pairs work was complete we split in to four groups and played some games of Rob the Nest. It is a fun game that the kids love, taking it in turns to rob a ball from another teams "nest", while they are robbing balls from yours! We then formed a large circle and passed the ball around before we stopped for a drinks and snacks break. After the break, we played a tag rugby game called Hunter. The kids took it in turns, in pairs, to be the hunted and then the hunter. The one being hunted had to run up the hall, grab a ball and get back without being tagged. The hunter at the same time had to run up the hall, around a cone, and then try and tag their opponent before they got back with the ball. We finished off the session with a couple of quick rounds of Boccia with each team winning one round. Our star performers this week were Justin and Kerrie - very well done to you both!
Join us again next week for more fun as we play a different sport. We had a really good turnout this week at Sportability for our first session after Half term. We started as always with a warm up led by Ray. Then it was time to grab a hockey stick and tennis ball to practice some Hockey skills. First up was some basic dribbling with the ball then some passing in pairs. Alan then introduced a game called Puppy in the Park. In this the puppy was the ball and the hockey stick represented the dog lead. The hall was marked out with cones and spots to denote where to walk the dog and where not to (roads etc). The task then was to walk the puppy in the right area by moving the ball around the hall. After a drinks break it was on to some shooting practice before playing some one vs one games After the main break we played some small sided games. In the first match Charlotte's team won against Kerrie's team. Kerrie's team then stayed on to play Valentina's team and won a close fought game. The last game was Charlotte's team versus Valentina's team which Valentina's team won. That meant that each team won one match each! We finished off the session with a couple of Golf Putting games. First they had to try and putt the balls in to the hoops. Then we played a cone game where they putted from behind a line and tried to hit as many cones as they could. The ones they hit they collected and the team with the most cones was declared the winner. Our Star performers this week were Anand and Rhys, in only his second week. Well done to both boys - great effort.
See you all again next Saturday for more fun and action. Our final session of the half term saw us practising our cricket skills. We welcomed two new members this week - Sam and Rhys - welcome to you both! Ray led the warm up as usual and then the kids paired up for some catching practice. They did a bounce pass to each other trying to catch the ball each time. Coach Alan then introduced a spot between each pair to try and hit with the ball with each throw. After a quick drinks break the group split in to three with Ray, Ollie and Alan each leading a game of Champion. They would throw the ball to each player in turn. If they caught the ball they would move up the line but drop it and they move to the bottom of the line. The person at the top of the line when the game ended was crowned the Champion. Hal won in Ollie's group, Todd in Ray's group and new boy Sam in Alan's group. We then focused on throwing at the wickets and fielding routines. To start with the kids were tasked with picking up the ball from a cone, moving it to the next cone, running round the stumps and then moving the ball back. This helps with co-ordination and getting the kids used to picking the ball up on the run. We then did some throwing at the wickets practice, getting further away with each round. Lastly, we had a quick competition. Hit the stumps and you stay in but miss with your throw and you have to sit out. With each round we moved the ball further away. The winner was Todd who was the only person to hit the stumps from the furthest position away. Well done Todd! After the break we played a couple of games of Three Tee Cricket. The group split in to two teams and each took a turn to bat or field. Each batter hit each of three balls of a tee. They then had to get as many runs between the wickets in the time it takes the fielding team to return the tees and the balls to their starting positions. Alan then added up all the runs scored by each player for a grand total for each team. The first game ended 58 to 51 in favour of Zakaa's team. The second game was also won by Zakaa's team, this time 53 to 44. We finished off with some games of Boccia with the last game ending in a 3-3 tie Our stars of the week this week were Todd and new boy Sam - well done lads!
We are off for half term next week so will be back on Saturday 25th at 10am - we look forwards to seeing you all then! We had a fantastic turnout this week and played the sport of Volleyball, which we have not played for quite a while. The session started as always with a warm up led by Ray. Alan then did some warm up exercises using cones scattered around the hall. These involved stretching down and touching the cones as you moved around the hall. He then introduced a count so that if he called out three the kids would have to bend down and touch 3 cones as quickly as possible. For the volleyball, we started by using the benches laid out along the middle of the hall. The kids were then grouped either side of a bench based on ability. They started by doing bounce passes to each other across the bench. They then moved on to hitting the ball back with the palm of their hands rather than catching and throwing. The idea being to get an accurate rally going with the ball going back and forth and trying not to hit it in any other direction! We then progressed to using tennis nets and getting some good rallies going! After the break we played King of the Court Volleyball style. A coach would throw the ball over the net to where the kids were lined up to take a turn. They had to hit the ball back with the palms of their hands, volleyball style, and get it back in to the court without being caught. Ollie and I were there to try and catch them out with a one handed catch. After some practice rounds we started the games and if you were caught out or failed to get the ball back over the net and in to the court then you were out and became part of the catching team. Last person standing was the winner. Davina won the first game and Justin won the second. Well done both! Our star performers this week were Pranav and Kealan - well done boys!
See you again next Saturday for more fun and games! Firstly, apologies for there being no post last week as I was away so missed a great session based around Tennis. This week was all about Basketball so after a warm up led by Ray, it was straight in to skills practice. We started with some basic ball control and dribbling before playing a traffic light game. The kids then did some moving of the ball around the body (over and under, side to side) and then finished off by passing in and around a circle. After the main break we did some shooting practice before some small sided games. The green team won the first game against the yellows by a score of 2-0. Next up it was the blue team against the yellows with the blues winning a tight game 3-2. The last of the round robin games was blues vs greens to see who would become the unbeaten champions - the green team were victorious 3-1. Well done all. Our star performers this week were Hal and Ellis, who is celebrating his birthday on Monday 30th so Happy Birthday Ellis!
Join us again next Saturday to see what Alan and the gang have in store for us. On a wet and windy Saturday it was great to be inside the Oak View School hall to play some Rugby. We started as always with a warm up, led by Ray. It was then straight in to the Rugby with the kids pairing up for some passing practice. From there we did some over-and-under and side-to-side. We then moved on to working in a circle, firstly passing around the circle, then running across the circle and passing the ball on. Finally, each player took a turn to run around the circle. They had to get all the way around before the ball made it's way around, being passed from player to player. After the main break we played some games of Hunter. This is a tag rugby game where the kids took it in turns to be hunter or hunted. One player, the hunted, runs up the hall to collect a rugby ball and tries to get it back to base without being tagged. The hunter has to run up the hall at the same time but go around a cone before trying to tag the other player once they have picked up the ball but before they get back. After every turn the hunter and hunted switch places so that each gets a turn playing each role. We finished off the session with some games of Boccia with the group splitting in to two teams at either end of the hall and aiming for hoops in the middle. With each game the number of hoops was reduced so by the time of the last game there was just one hoop left. The reds won most of the games but the final game ended in a tie with 2 balls in the hoop each. Our Stars of the Week this week were Charlotte and Davina - well done girls.
See you all next Saturday for more fun and excitement |
