All the "b's" this week as Spring Term ends at Sportability

22/3/2016

In our last week before the Easter Break we played a variety of games including Basketball, Boccia and Benchball. I am not sure it was intended that all sports played had to start with the letter B but they did - just not enough time for baseball or baton twirling!
The basketball started with some skills practice particularly around shooting. They then moved on to some one vs. one games before heading in to full team games. After a break we played two forms of Boccia, a paralympic sport similar to bowls. The first game was the classic version of the game where the aim was to get nearest to the white ball, often called the Jack.  The second round of games was Target Boccia where we use a big coloured target with different rings much like an archery target. The closest to the centre, or bullseye, the higher the score. Our last game was Benchball, a club favourite, which involves a lot of throwing, catching, running and team work. It gets frantic and loud and the kids love it!
Before the session ended the coaches agreed that Jessica was our Star of the Week this week for her enthusiasm and participation. Well done Jessica!. All the children were winners this week though as, being Easter, they all went home with a little Easter Egg each.
We hope everyone has a great Easter break and look forward to seeing you all back for summer term which starts on Saturday 16th April.

All about Hockey this week at Epping Forest Sportability

14/3/2016

This week at Epping Forest Sportability it was all about Hockey. After a warm up, the group started on some basic skills controlling the ball with the stick. They then moved on to a Traffic Light game which sounded a lot of fun.

After Bench Hockey the teams then went on to play some hockey matches. There were four teams with one game in the hall while the other game enjoyed the spring sunshine. The games were short to allow all the teams to play each other. At the end of the session was a game of bench ball to use up any remaining energy before it was time to go home.
Our star of the week is pictured with coach Alan on the left. He did really well this week and has joined in all the sports since he started coming to the club in January of this year. Well done!
Just a reminder that next week will be the last session before the Easter holidays - we hope to see as many of you as possible there on Saturday!
After a short break the group then split in to teams for some  games of Bench Hockey. Bench hockey looks a bit like table football in that all the players on one team sit behind one bench with their hockey sticks throught the bench, with the opposite team doing likewise on the opposite bench. The playing area is the gap between the benchs with goals at either end. Hopefully the photos on the right help show the game in all its glory!

Tennis skills and other fun at Epping Forest Sportability

5/3/2016

We had a bit of a mixed bag of ball sports this week at Epping Forest Sportability Club. After a warm up we started by doing some more throwing and catching work in pairs. This reinforced the work we did last week. We then moved on to some Tennis games practicing racket skills and ball control. We played a wonderful new game called Hamburger where teams have to control a tennis ball along a course by sandwiching the ball between their rackets (hopefully the picture below will help explain it better!). The kids really enjoyed this new game so one that may make another appearance again soon.

After a break the second half of the session consisted of two team games. Firstly, we played Goalball with teams aiming for the big coloured circles as their goals. Afterwards we finished off with some games of benchball, which is always a favourite. All these games involved control a ball and included elements of throwing, catching or balancing a ball.

At the end of the session the coaches all agreed that Hal was the Star of the Week so congratulations Hal and well done for particpating so well.
